Gdynia sightseeing

Gdynia sightseeing:
  • 10 Lutego St
  • The battleship, Błyskawica
  • The Dar Pomorza
  • The Sea Aquarium
  • Tricity Landscape Park

1. From 10 Lutego St. (10th February) and the railway station (also the SKM station with connections to Sopot and Gdańsk) walk up to Kosciuszko Square and the South Molo (the pier). The 10th of February is the date when the new Polish State acquired access to the Baltic Sea (a ceremonial flag was placed onto the waves of the sea and a ring was thrown into the water).

2. The battleship, Błyskawica (Lightning) was built between 1935-36 in Great Britain and from 1937 served in the Polish Navy. During WWII the Błyskawica took part in action in Narvik and Dunkirk (1940), in convoy duty across the Atlantic (1942) and during the Normandy invasion (1944). The crew sunk two enemy destroyers and various other enemy escort vessels, damaged three submarines and shot down three aircraft. In 1976 the Błyskawica was returned to port and is now permanently anchored there and can be visited.

3. The Dar Pomorza (The Gift of Pomerania) is a three masted training sailing ship built in 1909 in Hamburg. It was bought by the citizens Pomerania in 1929 as a gift for the Naval School in Gdynia. Between 1930-81 it served in the Navy State School. The Dar Pomorza was decommissioned in 1982 and is anchored in the port and open to visitors.

4. The Sea Aquarium is probably the most interesting museum in Tricity. There are mock ups of the sea bed, collections of models of various animal, fossils, but most important are the aquariums with their exhibits of fauna and flora from the Baltic and tropical seas as well.

5.Tricity Landscape Park (Trójmiejski Park Krajobrazowy) is a protected area (Landscape Park) in northern Poland, established in 1979, covering an area of 199.3 square kilometres (77.0 sq mi).
